8th Emirati German-Energy and Climate Day in Abu Dhabi

The 8th Emirati-German Energy and Climate Day took place on the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi and put the spotlight on the implementation of the COP28 Consensus, "Tripling Up, Doubling Down" which aims to triple global renewable energy capacity and double yearly energy efficiency rates by 2030, facilitating the transition away from fossil fuels.

This year, H.E. Stefan Wenzel, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and H.E. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI),  opened the event with encouraging welcoming remarks followed by Dr. Abdulla Malek, UAE Climate Change Special Envoy, who shed light on the implications of the COP28 Consensus for the UAE's energy transition. Anne Jacobs-Schleithoff, Head of Division Middle East North Africa at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), presented Germany’s measures for implementing the COP28 consensus.

The speaker lineup also included Dr. Faye Al Hersh  from Masdar, Shamma Husain Alrabeea from the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi, Andreas Feil from the German Embassy Abu Dhabi  and John Niedergesäss from Guidehouse.

Earlier that day, H.E. Sharif Al Olama and H.E. Stefan Wenzel, convened for the 8th High-Level Steering Group Meeting of the Emirati-German Energy and Climate Partnership where they outlined the priorities of the bilateral energy and climate cooperation for 2024, focusing on hydrogen, SAF, renewable energies, climate action, and private sector engagement. Both countries aim to deepen their energy cooperation and accelerate concrete projects and knowledge sharing.

During the meeting, H.E. Sharif Al Olama emphasized the joint commitment to sustainable development and innovation between both countries, acknowledging the platform for dialogue and synergy exploration.
H.E. Stefan Wenzel commended the UAE for the historic COP28 consensus, emphasizing the bilateral Energy and Climate Partnership as a platform to transform talk into action, exchange know-how and achieve global commitments.
