Exploring Waste Management, Water and Hydrogen Opportunities with a Bavarian Delegation in the UAE

08.05.2024

As the UAE continues to strive towards its net-zero goal, it also carries forward its relentless efforts to reduce waste through innovative treatment and recycling methods to convert it into valuable economic resources and environmentally friendly products that can be used in various sectors and projects.

New practices and state-of-the-art technologies are at the forefront of such transformations.
Under this premise, the Free State of Bavaria organized a delegation for companies in the fields of waste management, water and hydrogen to explore business opportunities in Oman and the UAE.

After two days of meeting with key stakeholders of the public and private sector with the aim to explore possible synergies and ways of collaboration as well as know-how exchange, the visit to the UAE was concluded with an Expert Dialogue that shed light onto the optimization of resources and the potential behind waste-to-energy and waste-to-hydrogen.

Held under the auspices of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy and hosted by the AHK and the Bavarian Representative Office in the UAE, the event was opened by the Consul General from Germany, Ms. Sybille Pfaff, followed by a ministerial keynote from Eng. Rabaa Al Awar Head of Waste Management at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and a refreshing presentation about Dubai’s accomplishments and strategies within this sector from Wafa Youssef, Project Management Specialist at Dubai Municipality.

The panel discussion that came after facilitated a dynamic exchange of ideas among experts, including Wafa Youssef and Ghaya Alhashmi from Dubai Municipality, Dr. Mohamed Abdallah from the University of Sharjah, and Florian Obermayer, Deputy Head of Section MENA Region at the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie, representing the Hydrogen Center Bavaria (H2.B).

The conversation between panelists, delegation members and guests in attendance underscored the importance of innovation and R&D in order to optimize waste treatment and feedstock for the production of energy and hydrogen, as well as the ongoing collaborative efforts on a multi-stakeholder level for driving sustainable change.

We are immensely grateful to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of this delegation visit and event.
